This page houses two documents
kindly sent by Martha Hernández-Martínez,
originally from Jinotega, who found this
photograph and a telegram among her
grandfather's papers. A more detailed,
first-hand narrative by Martha Hernandez is
forthcoming. Meantime the photo and
telegram are presented below.
The
telegram is dated 17 June 1933. It
tells us that Sandino arrived in San Rafael del
Norte on 17 June 1933 and departed soon after
for Los Embocaderos. June 17 was a
couple of months after Sandino's weeks-long
interview with journalist José Román along the
Río Coco (March 1933). This telegram marks
his return from Managua, where he had flown to
engage in peace talks with President Juan B.
Sacasa. He was probably heading to the
EDSN Cuartel General at "El Chipotón," the maze
of jungle camps deep in the interior, northeast
of Los Embocaderos in the Bocay Valley.
