This IS THE FIRST OF TWO PAGES
housing some 83 digital images of articles
in the Honduran literary magazine Revista Ariel,
published in Tegucigalpa by the Honduran writer and poet
Froylán Turcios. As is well known (and documented
extensively on this website), Sandino and Turcios had a
big falling out after José María Moncada's election to
the Nicaraguan presidency in November 1928. Turcios
essentially thought that Sandino should stop fighting
and disarm his army now that the Liberal Moncada had
been elected head of government. But Sandino considered
Moncada a sellout (vendepatria) and he and
Turcios stopped corresponding.
Before that time, however — essentially during
the 19 months from May 1927 to November 1928 — Ariel
had become one of Sandino's most important mouthpieces,
giving him and his struggle voice across the Western
Hemisphere and beyond.
This collection spans the 18 months from
February 1927 to July 1928. The
title page that begins the collection reads, "La
Guerra de Sandino en la Prensa Hondureña, Años
1927-1928," recopiliada por J. Sarmiento."
It is not known who J. Sarmiento is or when or
how they selected the items to be included,
other than selecting those treating the war in
Nicaragua.
The pages of Revista Ariel
are numbered —
presumably starting at "1" when it began
publication in 1924 — as are the clippings in
this collection. The page numbers here begin at
799 (in Feb. 1927) and continue intermittently
to 1267 (in July 1928).
