Quilali, Nicaragua           4 January 1928.

From: Second Lieutenant A. T. Hunt, USMC.
To: The Brigade Commander, 2nd Brigade, USMC.
Subject: Patrol, report of.

    1.   At 0745, January 2, 1928, in accordance with order of Lt. Gould, I left Quilali with one rifle platoon of 35 men, one machine gun squad and one Corpsman, to make contact with Richal's column at point midway between Quilali and Las Cruzes. At 0845, opened fire on men seen near house 800 yards to north. Men were seen to scatter. Ceased firing and proceeded to good ambush point on trail three miles from Quilali. Arrived 1000 and took up defensive position. At 1245, received message by plane to joint Lt. Richal at Las Cruzes. Arrived Las Cruzes 1415. Found one dead and four wounded, including Lt. Richal. Column in charge of Gy-Sgt E.G. Brown. Column composed of 42 marines, 20 Guardia Nacional, and 99 mules in train. Assumed command and reported by radio to CO Jicaro. Signalled planes at 1600 "am camping here tonight proceeding Quilali tomorrow". Planes dropped message "100 bandits seen about one mile north evidently to get mules in pasture. Pulled in mules. Buried 1st Sergeant Bruce, Thomas G. at point 23 yards bearing 190 magnetic from crest of hill at Las Cruzes. Camouflaged grave by scattering earth and burning brush over spot. At 2000 received orders from Division Commander to proceed to Quilali not later than tomorrow. Reported probable time of departure at 0900/ Bombs and rifle fire heard near 2030.

3 January 1928.

     At 0945, planes dropped water and nails for stretchers. At 1020 proceeded to Quilali firing ahead at probable ambush points with machine gun. Made slow time account of wounded. From 1330 to 1500 planes strafed surrounding hills, particularly north of Sapotial. No firing on column. Arrived Quilali 1540 and reported to Lt. Gould.

Summary & Notes:

   Column rescued Gould's beleaguered Special Expedition & escorted them back to Quilalí. 

   Air support critical; planes strafe ground, esp. north of Zapotillal for 1.5 hours.
