of Caraso, 29 to 30 May, 1928.

Officer, Rear Echelon, 5th Regiment,
Managua, as of 29 May 1928.
1. In compliance with
the above references, I have to report
the following:
(1) Date of patrol: from
10:30 A.M., 29 May, to 0200, 30 May,
1928.
(2) From: La Moca and Jinotepe, Nicaragua, to hacienda "Ojo de
Agua", about nineteen miles south to
southwest of Santa Teresa, Nicaragua.
(3) Total distance covered: 50 miles.
(4) Size of patrol: 1 Lieutenant, Guardia; 11 enlisted men Marines;
5 enlisted men Guardia; 1 truck (for 1
league. 17 Mounts (for part of march).
(5) Daily marches: 1st day from Jinotepe to hacienda "Ojo de Agua"
distance about 25 miles. Method of
travel: foot to Pintura, thence mounted.
Carrying rations: foot. Number of actual
marching hours: foot about two hours;
mounted, about fifteen hours. Daily
march: 2nd Day: from Santa Teresa to
Jinotepe and La Moca, mounted.
(6) Condition of route: rough, wooded roads and trails.
(7) Weather conditions encountered: fair and cloudy for first half
of trip; heavy rains during latter half
of trip.
(8) River water encountered constantly on trails, very good
drinking water. No other data.
(9) No daily camp sites.
(10) Size, location, attitude of towns along route: Santa Teresa,
population about 900, located SE of
Jinotepe; citizens were friendly. Santa
Cruz, population about 100, citizens
were friendly. Pintura, about three
huts, SW of Santa Cruz and Santa Teresa,
citizens friendly.
(11) At completion of march: men considerably exhausted, 1 marine
ill, horses worn out.
(12) Communication enroute: telephone
from Santa Teresa, otherwise no
communication possible. Telephone in
Santa Teresa located in Police Officer.
Visability for air patrols; poor during
day and impossible during heavy rains,
fog, or dusk.

none available.
(14) Other information of interest to
new patrols: none except as embodied in
the above report.
(15) Contact with bandits:
(A) Place - Hacienda "Ojo de Agua" about
19 miles southwest of Santa Teresa.
(B) Time and duration of contact: at
1600, 29 May, 1928; duration about 15
minutes although discovery of arms and
pursuits continued for about 50 minutes.
(C) Bandit's strength: twenty (20) men.
(D) Bandit leader: unknown.
(E) Were bandits mounted: yes.
(F) Arms carried by bandits: rifles. (of
poor make and in good condition.
(G) Aerial assistance: None.
(H) Casualties:

Bandits (a) Killed - one (1) (b) Wounded
- Unknown
Bandit: Prisoners, three (3). Also five
horses of which some belonged to natives
from whom they had been stolen (see
Guardia report); seven rifles. Taken to
Guardia prison in Jinotepe.
