THIS IS THE HOMEPAGE  for the "Soldados / Soldiers" section of the Gente / People pages of these EDSN webpages.

On August 25,1932, the Jefe Director of the Guardia Nacional wrote a confidential letter directing the commanding officers in towns across Las Segovias to compile lists of "known bandits" in their districts (a second was issued to some garrisons on Aug. 29). The resulting lists run to a score of pages and include hundreds of names. The Marines & Guardia had been making such lists since the start of the war.

The directive of August 1932 generated a kind of roster of the rank-and-file members of the EDSN at the time -- at least of those known to La Guardia.  Reports from Ocotal, Jinotega, Matagalpa, Esteli, Condega, Somoto, Palacagüina, and El Sauce were found in the US National Archives, Record Group 127, Entry 38, Box 18, and appear as JPEG images below.

This is probably as close as we'll ever get to a comprehensive list of the members of the EDSN at the height of the struggle.

Included here to illustrate a broader pattern of list-making long before the directive of 25 August 1932; indeed, the Marines started making lists of "bandit chiefs" from the moment they started intervening -- a practice doubtless learned years earlier in the Philippines, Dominican Republic, and Haiti.
