Declaraciones tomadas de Damaso Gómez y Florencio Sáenz, EDSN prisoners, May 20-29

This fascinating statement by two men held prisoner by the EDSN for ten days in May 1932 offers an exceptionally revealing eyewitness account of rebel forces under General Pedro Altamirano and Pedro Antonio Irías at the height of one of their most determined offensives into the Pis Pis and Bonanza mining districts.

The statement of Gómez & Sáenz is presented here in three parts:  (1) an exact transcription of the original, (2) a version in corrected standard Spanish, and (3) an English translation.

This critical introduction is in progress . . .

I thank E. Arturo Castro-Frenzel for his assistance with this document.

Preguntas a Florencio Saenz.

(This amongst themselves, as there was no fighting that day with the Guardias.

Andan bien armados y bestidos?.

3.   English Translation.

Declarations taken from Damaso Gómez y Florencio Sáenz who were held prisoner by the bandits from the 20th of May, when they were released at the Asa River on the 29th of the current month.[1]

Questions to Damaso Gómez: why didn’t you appear when you were notified on the 19th of the month? Because I wasn’t in my house and when I learned about it the troops had already surrounded the house and captured me, bringing me to the house of Daniel Reyes and afterward to the house of Florencio Sáenz, who they had also captured and tied up.

Questions to Florencio Sáenz: Why didn’t appear after the notification? Because, since the bandits had never passed by my house, because it’s so remote, I never believed they’d pass by this time.

How many people arrived at your house? Very few, but afterward they brought us to Pedrón and there were a lot of people. He was in the old store of Aguas Calientes and they slept there. The next day they were about to butcher a cow when they heard the airplanes, so they got scared and headed toward El Tesoro (The Treasury), that’s the old road from the Panama to Salto Grande. We were still tied up. Downhill from El Tesoro, i.e. going down a big hill, that was when they opened firefight was opened and they scattered, some to one side and others to the other side.

Against whom were they fighting? I suppose against the Guardia, we did not come to know it, but it was quite closely spaced. (This amongst themselves, as there was no fighting that day with the Guardias.) After this firefight Pedrón headed toward El Salto and said he was going to take El Salto and Irías and his people the Mine. They kept us for two days at the farm of Pedro Vásquez and they left with their people as if they were going to march in, but when they started being fired on from the fortifications, they retreated. Surely in El Salto they knew where they were, and placed the machine gun at the general headquarters and Pedrón and everybody freaked out and flew toward the Pis Pis Bodega, where they met up with General Irías and I have told you what had happened to them. That night we slept on a different farm and the next day we left heading toward the Pis Pis Bodega. Irías left, going toward Casca, but afterward we learned that he had come behind us because he sent a runner to Pedrón, telling him that the Guardia was chasing them. When we were at Juanón, we heard firing behind us and Pedro fled into the bush and gave orders to his people that if they opened fire again, they would kill us all. The next day Irías showed up with his people and we all left together. Upon arriving at the Asa River, we were released and we went through the mountains..

Who were the chiefs? With Pedrón was a Sánchez, Santiago, [Ismael] Peralta and a Tomás Piñeda, those were the ones we heard mentioned. With Irías was Simón González and the others we don’t remember their names because we hardly saw them, since we were with Pedrón.

Why did they cut off Daniel Reyes’ head? Well, it’s that he was with us and in the firefight they killed the guy who was holding him prisoner, so he managed to break free and it happened that instead of running toward the Guardia, he ran into Irías’s troops and right there they killed him.

Were they well armed and well clothed? Come off it, Señor! They were in rags, barefoot, and it’s true they had machine guns, Pedrón had four and Irías had four, but I think they had not much ammunition. They were hoping to march in the Neptune in order to finish off all the followers of Moncada and Pineda and the Machos [Marines], they called them all kinds of insulting names.

How many people do you think there were altogether? Pedrón had about 250 with him, and from what we were told, Irías had about the same. We only saw Irías twice and he’s even more bloodthirsty than Pedrón, since according to his own words, he’s even more inflamed since his big defeat at Biltigni. Pedrón issued an order to tell Irías that he could already attack the Mine, that he [Irías] should be in charge of the Mine and Pedrón would take El Salto, and that from El Salto he’d call him, so they could meet up at El Neptuno. But they were all fooled.

What did the soldiers say after their defeat? They were disconsolate and terribly afraid. I think that those people are not coming back.

We passed through four big scares, since for no reason they’d put their machetes against our necks, lug it against it and tell us they were going to cut our heads off, because Pedrón gave the order that if there were another attack, they should make our heads fly. When they let us go, Pedrón said that whoever wanted to follow him on his own will, he could do so. Of everybody we were with, which was eleven, only two, Teodoro and Miguel Romero, went with him. The rest of us went to our homes.

The declarations given by the others were pretty much the same.

NOTES:

[1] The 1934 US Army Map shows a settlement called “Asa” just to the west of the La Luz mining district. (The same map shows the La Luz mining district composed of five mines, though there were probably more. The main settlement around La Luz was the village and mining camp called Siuna.) The place called “Asa” sits next to a small river that flows directly south to the mining village of Wuani, where it empties into the Río Wuani, which continues south to the town of Cuicuina (which lay just north of the Cuicuina mining district) and thence east into the Prinzapolka. The “Río Asa” is very probably this south-flowing tributary of the Río Wuani. . . .
